Fred and Ginger

Need more help getting started with QuikWood (QW) go to this page: Quikwood Tips and Tricks

Fred’s Hat Brim:

Either transfer on pattern to watercolor paper or use circle template for pattern and cut out of paper.  The outside circle is 1 ¾” and the inside circle is 1 ¼”.  You could also cut out using a 1 ¾” and 1 ¼” circle punch.   Cut smaller circle out first.  Then insert paper into larger punch and looking from bottom evenly align and punch out.

Noses & Roses:

Mix 1/16” of QW and pull off a ¼” ball for each nose.   Roll into a cone that is about ¾” – 1” long. Let clay sit 5 – 10 minutes before starting or after rolling nose when it has set about 15 minutes reroll it so there is no flat spot on the bottom.

For the flower pull off a ¼” ball of QW and roll into a coil that is about 1” – 1 ¼” long.  Lay on parchment paper and press to flatten.  Let lay about 5 minutes.  Begin rolling from one end on an angle.  Continue rolling keeping the bottom tight and having the edge flare out.

Roll additional noses and roses until you have used all the clay.     Allow to cure.

Inserting Tree in Shaker :

If desired brush a little white glue on tip of the tree and then sprinkle with glitter.     Allow to dry. Place Super Glue Gel on bottom of tree and insert into jar.  Align with finger and/or tweezers.  You could also put a small piece of Quikwood if the base is concave.  Hold in place a little bit to let glue set up.  Fill shaker with glass glitter up to the bottom of the tree.   If desired you can fill the shaker with other things such as beads, bells, lace, sequins, ribbon, etc.

Adding Ginger’s Head, Nose and Hat:

Mix a ½” of QW and begin pinching it and patting it to make a flat pancake.  Lay on1 ½” ball and begin pressing and pulling until the ball is covered.   Roll in your hands to smooth.     If the bottom is not completely covered it is ok as long as you have enough clay to cover the rim.   Pick your best side for the front and align and press into the rim of the shaker.  Place nose in center of face.  I like my nose to turn up a little.  Press clay up against nose, if needed.  Place lid on top for the hat and press firmly into place. Allow to cure.

Lay hat band on head.  Sit lid on top of band to make sure you are happy with position and then remove lid.  Mix 1/8” of QW and roll into a 3” coil.  Lay on top of head next to inside of the band and press into place.  You want to make sure the clay is on the inside of the lid not the outside. Place lid on top for the hat and press firmly into place.  Remove any excess clay.  Allow to cure.

Adding  Fred’s Arms:

To make the arms cut a piece of wire about 14-16 inches long.  Wrap around neck (just above rim on shaker) making sure ends are even and then twist together in the back. Fold twisted wire up at back and then bring each wire forward and fold out at shoulders (side center). Mix 3/8” of QW and roll into a coil about 5” and wrap around rim, then gently flatten to make smooth against bottom of rim and next to head.  The clay should go around the arms with the arms coming out of the bottom. Allow to cure.

(Note: In the video I had you twist the wire together in the front, but since then I like it in the back, then if you have a bump it is not as noticeable.)

Shaping Arms :

Bend arms forward from shoulders and then bend elbow about 1” down.  Bend to create wrist about 1” from elbow.  Using round nose pliers   bend wire about ½” from wrist and loop back to wrist to create hand.  Fold wire forward from wrist to make thumb and then trim.

Finishing Sculpting on Fred and Ginger:

Mix 1/16” of QW and pull off two ¼” balls to make rose leaves for top of her dress.  Roll each into a cone that is about ½” and then flatten.  Place each on front center of her collar with points standing up and out and place rose on center of leaves.

For him pull off two ¼” balls to make holly leaves.  Roll each into a cone that is about ½” and then flatten.  Position on his hat with the tips standing out and up.  Pull off three small balls for berries and place in center of leaves.  For the bow tie pull off two ¼” balls and roll into a cone that is about ¼”  + long.  Push on fat end with finger to square end.  Place on collar on center front with the points towards the center and the ends lifting up.  Pull off small ball for the knot and place on center, gently flatten.  Allow to cure.

Finishing details for Ginger:

Note: Before adding final details on Ginger you might want to do painting on face.

Begin gluing the rhinestone chain to the center back on the bottom edge of the hat with Super Glue Gel.  You will only need a small amount of glue.  Put a little drop of glue about every ½” – ¾” and wrap around to back.  At back trim any extra gems off and glue end in place.

For the feather either use a very small feather, the tip of the feather, or a section of the feather.  One way is to cut off the tip then go down about ½” and cut off, and then trim up a little on each side of center.  This will give you a feather that goes two ways so I like to lay it on an angle.  Another way is to cut a section that is about ¼” wide and then trim next to center on one side.  Lay this piece sideways on top.   Once you have decided on the type of feather you would like glue on hat.

Mix a sliver of QW and pull off ¼” ball.  Lay on base of feather and gently flatten.  Place rhinestone in center of Quikwood and gently press in place.
