SJ- Sweet Treat Angels

Quikwood Basics:

  • Quikwood is a two part resin.  When mixed together you have about 20 minutes of open time before it begins to cure.  It will fully cure in 24 hours.
  • Only cut off as much as you need at a time.
  • Make sure it is thoroughly mixed together (no swirls of color) or it will not cure.
  • Do not wear jewelry especially rings when working with QW.
  • Apply Avon Silicone Glove before starting and as needed when working with the QW.
  • Use DecoArt Extender to blend QW being careful not to use too much or it will make your QW gummy.
  • Before painting wipe surface with baby wipe to remove any oils.

Sculpting Instructions:

Head, Nose & Candy Canes:

Mix 1/8” QW and roll into ball.  Place parchment paper over pattern.  Lay clay in center of pattern and begin pressing and patting with palm of hand until clay fills the pattern.  Apply more pressure on outside edges since you are creating a dome shape.  Repeat for other two angels. Allow to cure.

For the noses mix a sliver of QW and pull off a small ball about ¼” and roll into a cone about ¾” long.  Lay on face slightly below center and blend top into head.    It should cover about ¾ of the face.  Use blade to flatten bottom of nose.  Repeat for other two angels

If you have extra clay, pull off a ¼” ball and roll into a coil about 1” long.  Lay on parchment paper and turn top edge to make hook .  Blend bottom to make a little pointy so it will be easy to insert into cone.   Make ½ of the cones to the right and the rest to the left.  You will need 5 canes for this project.  If you do not have enough clay for all the canes make more later as you have extra clay.

Legs:

For each set of  legs mix 3/16” of QW and divide into 2. Roll each into a coil about 2” long with a pointy toe.  Slightly flatten top of leg and use tool to put hole in top of each leg.  Allow to cure.  Drill small holes in bottom of ornament to attach legs.  The holes should be in bottom of second and fourth scallop, towards the edge closest to the center.  This will make the legs a nice distance apart.

Wings and Cherry Cookies:

Mix ¾” of QW and roll into a ball.   Then begin pressing and pinching to make a flat pancake.  Lay on parchment paper and begin flattening with palm.  Cut out 3 heart s, reroll excess clay and repeat in same manner until all the hearts are cut.  Allow to cure.

With excess clay pull off ¼” ball and then pull off very small piece of clay for cherry on top.  Roll larger piece into a ball and then slightly flatten. Roll small piece into ball and place on top.  Repeat with remaining clay to make 3 cookies.  Allow to cure.

Cake:

Mix ¼” of QW.  Roll into a ball and then begin shaping into a cake ¾” wide and 5/8” high.   Lay on pattern and then continue shaping.  The top should be flat and the cake should be fatter in the center.

Mix 1/8” of QW and pull off a ball ¼” ball and roll into a coil about ½” and press into bottom middle of cake for stand.  Pull off another ball about ¼” and roll into ball and then flatten.  Attach to bottom for stand.   Pull off another ¼” ball and roll into a coil about 1” – 1 ¼” and lay on bottom of cake to create top of stand.  Continue adjusting as it dries.

To make flower for on top of cake pull off ¼” ball and roll into a coil about 1 ¼” long.  Lay on parchment paper and flatten. Let clay lay for about 5 minutes so that it will be easier to work with.  Roll two small balls and flatten pull point on one edge to shape leaves.  Lay leaf on top of cake, create another and lay to side of first leaf.  Lift flatten coil for flower and begin rolling from one end to make center of flower.    The center should be tight, as the flower gets bigger continue wrapping and begin pleating bottom to make open petals.  Place flower on top of cake.  If needed use a pointy tool or tip of pencil to help place flower.  After attaching flower I added an extra leaf to the top of my cake.

Use any additional clay to make more candy canes or cookies.

Gingerbread Men:

Mix 1/8” of QW.  Pull off small ball of clay about 1/8”  and lay on parchment paper and flatten.  Pull another ball slightly smaller and divide into 2.  Roll each piece into small cone and lay under each side of face to make arms.  Pull off another 1/8” ball and place under arms.  Slightly flatten.  Use tool and push up from bottom to make legs.  Using tool or tip of pencil, place eyes and buttons on gingerbread men.    Allow to cure.

Note:  At this point I took a break and began painting pieces before assembling.

Hair & Glass:

Mix 1/4” of QW and allow to sit 5 minutes, this will make it easier to sculpt hair.

To make hair on first angel pull off ¼” + ball of clay and roll into a 1 ½” coil, Starting at top right side of face attach coil and begin waving in and out as you go down side of face.  Have bottom of coil curl up. Repeat for opposite side of face.  Pull off 1/8” ball and roll into a coil 1” long.  Begin rolling at one end like you would a cinnamon bun.  Lay on top of head.

For second angel pull off 1/8” +” ball of clay and roll into a coil, then wind into a curl from the end.  Lay on top side of face with curl going backwards.  Make another one for opposite side and then repeat for bottom curls, having them come forward.  Laying bottom curls under top curls.  Pull another ball of clay and roll into a coil about 1 ¼” long and coil into a bee hive and place on top center.  I had end curl up.

For third angel pull off small ball about 1/8” and place on edge of face, Continue making small balls and adding around face.   Using tool or pencil press point into each ball to create curl.  I then added another ball on top of the curls on the bottom and top center and then insert tool in center of those curls.  Allow to curl.

With remaining clay make a glass by rolling it into a coil about ¾” long and then flatten top and bottom.    Insert round tool or eraser into top.  Allow to cure.

Candy Cane Cone and Tray:

Mix ¼” of QW and divide in 2.  Let sit 5 minutes. To make Candy Cane cone roll piece of clay into a cone about ¾” long.  Lay on parchment paper.  Gently insert candy canes into top of cone.  Reshape cone if needed and allow to cure.

For the tray roll other piece of clay into a coil about 1 ¼” long.  Lay on parchment paper and flatten.  Press along front edge and pull up a little to create rim.  Using blade push on back edge of tray to thicken a little and also make straight.

Allow to cure.

Attaching Heads, Arms & Goodies:

Align heads and attach head using Super Glue Gel.  Mix a sliver of QW and divide in 3.  Roll each piece into a small ball and lay on back of head next to shoulders to help secure head.

Mix 3/16” of QW for each set of arms and divide into two coils each 2” long.   Let lay for 5 minutes.

Mix a sliver of QW for attaching things.

For the cake angel position arms at shoulders and then lay cake in place and position arms.  When happy with placement  lift cake and place small piece of QW to back and some super glue gel.  Position on body and them replace arms and firmly press in place.  Make sure arms bend at elbows.  If needed give arms a little tug to lengthen.

For candy cane angel place arms at shoulders and then lay cone in place and position arms.   I had the cone on an angle.  When happy with placement lift cone and place small piece of QW to back and some super glue gel.  Position on body and then replace arms and firmly press in place.  Make sure arms bend at elbows.  If needed give arms a little tug to lengthen.

For cookie angel place arms at shoulders and then lay tray in place and position arms.    The tray should be about the same position as the top of the cake stand.  When happy with placement glue tray to angel.    Position cup on tray and glue in place. Place small piece of clay on back of gingerbread and position on doll.  The one in center should be higher.  Glue cookies in place on tray with two on the tray and one on top.   Replace arms and firmly press in place.  Make sure arms bend at elbows.  If needed give arms a little tug to lengthen.

Adding Dress Trim:

Mix ¼” of  QW.  To make collar for pink dress pull off two ¼” balls.  Roll each into a ball and then into a cone about ½” long.  Lay fat part of each cone at center front and wrap around neck, leaving small space at front for flower.  Gently pat into place.  For the center flower pull off ¼” ball and make flower like flower on cake.  Place on center of collar.

For trim across bottom on red dress pull off 3/8” ball and roll into a coil.  Lay on dress and gently pat into place removing any excess clay.

For trim on green dress pull off 3/8” ball of clay and roll into a coil and lay into place.  Gently flatten.  Pull off ¼” ball of clay and roll into 1 ¼” coil and flatten.  Make flower like you did for cake and place on band.  Pull off two small balls and flatten and shape into leaf.  Add to each side of flower.

For trim on pink dress pull off 3/8” ball and roll into coil.  Lay and gently pat into place.  Using exacto knife place vertical marks on band about 1/8” apart.

Adding Halo and Wings:

Position wings and then glue into place using Super Glue Gel.  Mix 1/8” of QW and divide into 3.  Then divide each piece  into two and roll into a ball. Press clay over wing onto back to help secure in place.  Repeat on other wing and angels.

To make halo wrap 4” piece of wire around top of small bottle (I use my glue bottle) or ½” dowel.  Twist ends together, fold ends down and shape halo into oval.  Trim off any excess wire.  Mix up 1/8” of QW and pull off 1/3.  Position halo and lay piece of clay over ends of halo to secure in place.  Make hook by folding over small piece of wire and inserting in clay holding halo.  Allow to cure.  Repeat for other two angels.
