 Sculpting Instructions

Quikwood Basics:

  • Quikwood is a two part resin.  When mixed together you have about 20 minutes of open time before it begins to cure.  It will fully cure in 24 hours.
  • Only cut off as much as you need at a time.
  • Make sure it is thoroughly mixed together (no swirls of color) or it will not cure.
  • Do not wear jewelry especially rings when working with QW.
  • Apply Avon Silicone Glove before starting and as needed when working with the QW.
  • Use DecoArt Extender to blend QW being careful not to use too much or it will make your QW gummy.

Getting Started

Insert Dowel into pointy end of 2.5” Styrofoam egg, and then place 1” ball on top of dowel leaving ¼” for the neck.  Mix up sliver of QW and divide into 4.  Roll ball into small coil about ¾” long.  Wrap around bottom of neck and blend into egg and then dowel.  Blend until smooth using extender if needed.   Roll second ball of QW into coil and wrap under head, blend onto ball and down dowel.  Shape making sure to keep neck thin and have QW blended onto the egg and ball.  Allow to cure.

For Prim (Curly Hair) – Mix up 1/8” of QW.  Roll clay into a ball and then start pressing and pinching to make a flat pancake .  Lay on front of face and begin pressing and blending over head using extender if needed.  Keep blending until clay is evenly distributed and smooth.  Repeat for second doll.

Cut a piece of wire 1 1/2″ and fold over using round nose pliers. Push into head.  For “Prim” the doll with the curly hair, leave the hook a little longer so that it will sit above the hair.

For Proper  (Wire Hair)- Mix up 1/8” of QW.  Roll clay into a ball and then start pressing and pinching to make a flat pancake .  Lay on front of face and begin pressing and blending over head using extender if needed.  Keep blending until clay is evenly distributed and smooth.

For  the wire hair; cut pieces of wire of varying lengths and insert into head.  We used 11 pieces of wire.  Use pliers to insert if needed.  The wire can be trimmed later.

Cut a piece of wire 1 1/2″ and fold over using round nose pliers. Push into head.

Attaching Nose:

Mix up a sliver of QW and pull off a small piece for the nose.  Roll into a cone shape and attach to face.  Nose should start just below center of head and go up to forehead. Use fingers to press and blend nose as needed.  Use blade to flatten bottom of nose.  Allow to cure.

Note: Any time you have extra QW wood you can flatten it and blend it on areas of the doll that are still Styrofoam.  Be careful not to add the QW to an area that we are going to need to insert something like the legs and the head.

Creating and attaching Legs:

For each dolls cut off 1/4” QW and divide into 2.  Roll each piece into a coil about 3” long.  Slightly flatten top of leg and then using pencil or tip of tool make a hole in the top of the leg.   Allow to cure.  Slightly flatten top of leg and then using pencil or tip of tool make a hole in the top of the leg.   Allow to cure.

To attach the legs for each doll cut1/4” QW and divide in 2.  Cut two pieces of wire about 3” long and use round nose pliers to fold in half.  Slip wires into legs and insert into the bottom of the egg.  Leave about ½” of the wire exposed.  Also allow yourself enough room to work between the legs.  Roll the clay into a coil about 1 ¼” and wrap around top of wire next to egg.  Blend clay into egg and then shape top of leg with fingers, using extender if needed.  Repeat with second leg.  If needed use an old paint brush to blend the clay between the legs.  Adjust length of wires if needed by pushing in or pulling out. Allow to cure.

Mix QW up a sliver at a time. Taking a small piece at a time, flatten and press and blend to any Styrofoam area on the doll.

Creating Dress:

Cut 1” of QW and roll into a coil about 6” long on a piece of parchment paper.  Using Extender on the palm of your hand begin flattening until about 1/2″ 3/4″”.  Pick up the clay with your blade and lay across front of doll where you would want the skirt.  If your clay is larger than her waist tuck it here and there as you go around.  Once you are happy with the placement begin blending the top of the skirt up into the dress.  You will need to use a little pressure.  Hang the doll so the skirt does not get damaged.  Wait about 5 minutes and then begin working with skirt pinching an ruffling the skirt.  At this time you can also pinch the clay to make it thinner. Allow to cure.  Repeat on second doll.

Prim Hair and Bow:

Mix up a sliver of QW and begin rolling very small balls and place on doll head.  Press in the center of each ball with the end of your sculpting tool or a pencil.  I did a few balls and then would press them. Cut additional small amounts as needed.  After the head is done, roll another ball and lay on top of the bottom circle on each side of the front.  Press hole in from front.  For the bow pull off a piece of clay and roll into a ball about ¼”, then roll into a cone and pinch and flatten.  Lie on doll’s head and press in place with tool.  Make other side bow the same way and press into place.  Roll a small ball and lay in the center.

Sunflower:

Mix of sliver of QW.  Spray flower mold with a little oil.  Pitch off a piece of clay and roll into a ball and then press into mold and release them and lay on a piece of parchment paper to cure.  I used the small petal with the lines in it. Re-spray with oil as needed.  Make 7 petals.  Note:  if you did not have the mold you could roll small cones and slightly flatten them for the petals. Allow to cure.

Cut 6” of wire for the flower stem.  Fold wire over at about ¾” from end, then curl the short end and press flat.   Mix up 1/8” of QW and divide it in 2.  Roll one piece into a ball and then slightly flatten into a 3/4″ circle.  Press wire into QW and then press petals into edges of clay.  Once you have all of your petals arranged, make a ball with the remaining QW and press on the top center of the flower.  Press some dots into the center with a pencil or sculpting tool.   Allow to cure.

Attaching Arms For Proper (Wire Haired Girl):

For the wired hair girl, “Proper” -Mix ¼” QW and pull a pinch off for the buttons.  Then pull other small piece off and roll it into a ball and place on the back of the heart.  Press the heart in place on the doll.  Divide the remaining clay in two and roll each piece into a long coil about 3”. Place her left hand over the heart and then bring it up to the shoulder.  Have the other arm come down and to the side.  Press down the shoulders and blend.  Roll two small balls for the buttons and place on doll, slightly flatten.  Using pointy tool put two holes in the button.

Attaching Arms For Prim (Curly Haired Girl):

Curly Haired Girl, “Prim” – Cut ¼” QW and divide in 2.  Roll each into a coil about 3” long. Position arms on doll so that they are both holding the flower, one higher than the other.  Lift the hands up so that there is a little opening for the flower to slip through each of her hands.  While it is curing keep checking to make sure hands are still open.  Press down the shoulders and blend.
