Peter Pumpkin

Getting Started:

Cut off tip of cone and insert dowel into cone.  Cut off a small amount at a time because you want the dowel to fit snuggly.  Remove dowel.

Insert the 1/8” dowel in to the top center of the egg (pointy end) with about ½” + of the dowel showing.  Mix a sliver of QW and roll into a 1” coil and wrap around dowel.  Blend clay down onto Styrofoam and then up onto dowel.  Use extender if needed.

Mix up 1/16” of QW and insert the 3/16” dowel in bottom center of Peter about ½”.  Roll clay into 1” coil and wrap around bottom of dowel.  Blend half out onto the Styrofoam and then blend remaining clay down on dowel using extender if needed.   Make sure they are both straight.   Tip:  If you have a water container with holes for paint brushes, this is a great place to stand it to cure.  Allow to cure.

Embellishing Cone:

Mix up 1/4” of QW and roll into a 6” long coil. Put a few dots of Super Glue Gel around top of cone.  Start at back and lay coil around top of cone.  Gently flatten coil and blend back together.   Using Exacto knife press line into clay about every ¼”.  Turn upside down and allow to cure.

Adding Head:

The 1 ½” ball is the head.  Press onto dowel and then remove. To cover head mix 3/4” of QW and pinch between fingers to make a flat pancake and cut out a star using the next to largest Kemper star cutter(5/8”) .  Reroll clay and pinch to make a flat pancake. Lay on head and begin pressing and patting to cover head.  Roll head between hand to make smooth and place on top of body.  If needed, use fingers and pad of hand to continue shaping the  face so that it is nice and smooth.  Make sure you have a nice smooth side for the face.   Lay star on top of head and gently pat in place.  If you want a hook on top fold over a piece of wire and trim to ½” and insert in top of head between the points of the star to the back of the star.   You will want to make sure you have a nice side for the face and one of the points of the star should be in the center front.  Allow to cure.

Adding Face and covering body:

Mix 1/8” of QW and pinch and flatten to make a pancake.  Cut 2 Medium Kemper stars for the eyes.  Allow to sit.  To make the mouth, pull off a ¼” ball of clay and roll into a 1” coil with the ends being a little thinner.  Lay on face with the ends curling up.  Gently press and flatten.  Using Exacto knife cut through center of mouth going from side to side.  Then cut down center of mouth from top to bottom.  Divide each side in three by making two more cuts on each side.

For the nose, pull off ¼” ball of clay and roll into a small cone and place on center of face.  Gently turn nose up a little.  Place eyes on each side above nose.

Pull off 3/8” ball of clay to make top of stem.  Roll into a ¾” cone and place on top of top star.  Blend clay down onto star points, using extender if needed.  Shape the top of the stem by pinching with fingers to make a little thinner.  Cut a 1 1/2” piece of wire and insert in top of   stem and blend clay up onto wire.  Let site a little and blend clay up on wire.  You will curl stem once clay is cured.

With the clay that is left pinch it thin and lay it onto the body and press and blend.  Continue until body is covered mixing up more clay as needed.

Adding Cat and finishing Shirt:

For the cat Mix 1/8” of QW.   Place a pencil line about 3/4 “ -7/8”  from bottom of character around body.  Also draw a straight line down center front.  Draw clay into a ¾” oval that is a little pointed on top.  Place on his body about ¼” – 3/8” about line and about the same distance from the center line.

Mix another 1/8” of QW and pull off  a 3/8” ball for the head and lay aside.  Use the rest of the clay to make a collar for Peter.  Roll the clay into a 1 ½” long coil and gently flatten.  Cut a V in the center.  Pick up each piece and lay at center top and wrap around neck.  The collar will not go the whole way around to the back.    Place ball for head and sit on top of the body.  Using the clay from the V, pull off 4 small balls (about 1/8”) for the buttons.  Place on shirt and gently flatten.  Using point of tool, place two holes in each button.

T have the cat turn in a little push the head a little to the center and  press a little on the edge closest to the center to flatten a little.  Place very small ball of clay on face for nose. Allow to cure.

Mix 1/8” of QW and pull off two very small balls for the ears about 1/8”  Place balls on each side of head.  The one the center should go to the back and the one on the other side should come forward a little since the head is turned.  Once in place, pinch top of ball to put a little point on each ear.  If you are having trouble try using a tool to help you.

For the inside leg pull off a ¼” ball and roll into a 5/8” coil.    Press down a little on the top and position leg up against bottom of body.  For the other leg, pull off a 3/8” ball and roll on edge of ball to create a little coil for the leg.  The top of the coil will be fatter for the hip. The coil will be about ½”.  Flatten the ball end and lay on bottom of body and to the outer edge.    For the inside arm pull off a ¼” ball and roll into a ½” coil.  Lay at side of body.  For the tail pull off a ¼” ball of clay and roll into a 1” + coil .  Lay on back of cat and put a little curl on tail.

Mix ¼” of QW for the arms and divide into 2.  Roll each piece into a coil that is about 2” long.  Place the one arm opposite the cat and sit at shoulder and bend forward.  Place the other arm at the shoulder and have it come forward over the middle of the cat. Pull off another ¼” ball for the other arm of the cat and roll into a ½” coil.  Lay on cat shoulder and over top of Peter’s arm.  Allow to cure.

Attaching Cone and Adding ball on Ornament:

To help stabilize your character in the cone you can use either some oasis or a 1 ½” Styrofoam ball.  If using ball push hole through center with tool or paintbrush handle.  Place ball on dowel and then insert into cone.  Leave a little room under character so you can add some krinkled paper under him.  Place mark on dowel where it is coming out of the cone.  Remove dowel and mix a sliver of QW.  Roll QW into a coil and wrap around top of mark.  Insert dowel back in cone and let cure.

Mix ¼” of QW and let sit 5 minutes.   Decide on the length of dowel you want extended from the cone.  I cut my dowel 1 ¼” from bottom of cone.  Roll clay into a ball.  Using tool insert hole in ball and place a drop of glue in hole.  Add to bottom of dowel and reshape if needed.  Allow to cure.

Hooty

Getting Started:

Start the same as Peter Pumpkin.

Embellishing Cone:

Mix up 1/8” of QW and let sit 5 – 19 minutes. Pinch and flatten.  Using medium Kemper star cutter, cut out stars and place randomly on cone.  Remix excess clay and continue cutting and attaching stars until you have the number you want on the cone. Turn upside down and allow to cure.  Use any excess clay to cover body.

Adding Head:

The 1 1/4” ball is the head.  Press ball onto dowel and then remove. To cover head mix 1/2” of QW and pinch between fingers to make a flat pancake.   Lay on head and begin pressing and patting to cover head.  Roll head between hand to make smooth and place on top of body.  If needed, use fingers and pad of hand to continue shaping the face so that it is nice and smooth.  Make sure you have a nice smooth side for the face.   If you want a hook on top fold over a piece of wire and trim to ½” and insert in top of head.  Allow to cure.

Adding Face and covering body:

Mix 1/8” of QW.  For the feathers around the eyes pull off two balls a little bigger than ¼” and lay on front of face with a little space between them.  Gently flatten them with your fingers so that the two balls come together.  For the nose pull off a ball a little less than ¼” and roll into a ½” cone.  Place between the feathers with the tip standing out a little.  For the brow pull off two balls that are a little bigger than ¼”.  Roll each into a 1” cone.  Place fat ends of cones in center between feathers.  Have cone go across eye with the ends curling up.  Do this on both sides.  Pull off two very small balls for eyes about 1/8” or less.  Place in center of feather and gently pat, allow to cure.

With the clay that is left pinch it thin and lay it onto the body and press and blend.  Continue until body is covered mixing up more clay as needed.

Adding Pumpkin and Wings:

For the pumpkin, mix 1/4” of QW ;and for the wings mix ½” of QW and divide into two. Roll the    clay for the pumpkin into a pointy oval and then pinch at the top and pull a small stem.  Place on body at about the same position as you did the cats body on Peter.  Press  sides of pumpkin so that the center sticks out farther.  Using pointed tool or exacto knife and place a 5 lines on pumpkin to create sections.  Start at the center front and go out as you come in to center bottom.  Create same line on opposite side of center front.  Divide outside sections in two.

Roll clay for wings into a 2” cone.  Place fat part of cone on each side and press and gently flatten.  Blend one arm to hold pumpkin and have other arm down at the side with a slight bend.  Press to secure.  Allow to cure.

Attaching Cone and Adding ball on Ornament:

Do this the same way you did for Peter Pumpkin.   Allow to cure.
