On this page I show step-by-steps of how I created the background for my project “Heaven and Nature Sing!” in “Create A Mixed Media Christmas with Friends”.
Begin by painting the tree Salem Blue. Glue music paper to the front of the tree with matte medium or Decou-page. Tear the paper to fit the tree, leaving some of the blue on the edges. I bought a Christmas Carol book at a used book store, I liked how nicely the pages were aged. Old hymnals often have a section with Christmas carols. If you can not find either, you could use scrapbook paper with music on it or make your own paper by using a musical stamp. Apply a coat of matte medium over top of paper.
Paint a thin coat of Sand over surface of tree. While still wet pick up Salem in the side of your brush and go around edges. Put a few touches of blue in center of tree. When dry seal with matte medium.
Then apply a coat of DecoArt Media Crackle Glaze. Let dry thoroughly.
When dry, brush on coat of DecoArt Media Patina Green Antiquing Creme. Let dry.
When dry, use a soft damp cloth and wipe off starting in center, leaving more on the edges. When you are happy with it, seal with a coat of matte medium.
Now you are ready to begin painting following the directions in the book. I will give you a few more photos of the project as I continue painting. I have base coated the flesh tone and stroked on the first coat of the dress.
This show the shading and details added to the dresses and wings.
